one thick hit, I struggle
not to choke
ignoring the sting at the whites of my eyes
as my lips set free plumes of slowdancing smoke
four after midnight
I shift toward my coat but
momentum by my own moves is so
soon belied
a second breath swallowed
so this time I won’t choke
thoughts drift drily
deep
and black in my throat
out through my yawning
mouth
hot they rise
mouth parted
unveils white
and soft-beating smoke
it doesn’t much matter
how
I’ve misspoke
you’re not versed in my music
my lows
my highs
another thick hit
makes me cough and I choke
