Interruption
Dew soaks through the back of my shirt
as I lay upon the grassy hill
eyes closed to starlight
falling through its leafy sieve
thinking of only the rain
and wondering how to believe in the beauty above

When all I see is the back of my eyelids
inscribed with reflections of light already seen
light already bound to earthly shapes
the blood of foreign suns
that soaks city sidewalks
erased by the falling of footsteps
brushed off the shoulders of giants
with the mere suggestion of a hand

I see by the light of man
not the light of stars
light that does not beget light
but shadows on the wall of the cave
light that illuminates a vague existence
a silhouette created in our own image

What power do we have
as creatures of sinew and bone
but to interrupt the stars on their journey past?
and what power do we have
as spirits bound to flesh
to know the stars
but by interruption?
