When he was young he found it hard
To swallow prescription pills
So his mother tossed them in a mortar
And ground them to a paste
A few years later he'd cut and paste
Sensations till he felt no more
Broke in exhaustion he tried to heal
Taking lacerated blue-black pills
When older still each night he paced
Haunted by vacant stares
Vying with himself to forget the taste
Of the tears his mother would waste
For he found him to be an opalescent pill
Much too beautiful to take
So he shredded their sugared memories
